Letter, 1861 September 12, New York, to an unidentified general [manuscript].

Davis says he has lost all sympathy for the South, comments on Russian and French reactions to the war, declares that he would wage a defensive war only, reports that he has incurred some financial losses from both Confederate and Union confiscations, and hopes he lives to see a successful outcome.
